Natural vs Lab-Grown Diamonds: What's the Difference?
Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds, with the same chemistry, hardness and sparkle as diamonds mined from the earth. The difference is where and how they formed.
At a glance
| Natural | Lab-grown | |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Pure carbon crystal | Pure carbon crystal |
| How it forms | Deep in the earth over billions of years | In a laboratory in weeks, by CVD or HPHT |
| Hardness | 10 on the Mohs scale | 10 on the Mohs scale |
| Grading | GIA, IGI and others | IGI, GIA and others, marked as laboratory-grown |
| Price | Higher, rarer | Usually much lower for the same size and quality |
| Resale value | Holds value better | Lower resale value |
CVD and HPHT
Lab diamonds are grown in two ways. CVD (chemical vapor deposition) builds the crystal layer by layer from carbon-rich gas. HPHT (high pressure, high temperature) recreates the conditions deep in the earth. Both produce real diamonds, and the method is listed on the grading report.
Which should you choose?
- Choose lab-grown if you want a larger or higher-grade stone for your budget.
- Choose natural if rarity, tradition and long-term value matter most to you.
Every diamond we sell is clearly labeled as natural or lab-grown, and certified stones come with their grading report.
