Custom Jewelry: How to Design a One-of-a-Kind Piece

21/10/2026 | Esmeralda Jewels

A custom piece lets you wear something no one else has: an engagement ring designed around your story, a pendant with a family stone, or a new design made from an heirloom. Here is how the process usually works.

1. Share your idea

Start with whatever you have: photos you like, a sketch, a piece you want to update, or simply a description. Tell us the type of jewelry, the metal, the stones and your budget.

2. Choose the stones and metal

We help you choose the center stone, whether a loose diamond or a colored gemstone, and the metal that suits your style. Our guides to the 4Cs and gold and platinum explain the options.

3. See the design before it is made

Before anything is made, you review a design of your piece so you can check the shape, proportions and details and ask for changes. We also offer a 3D CAD design service for rings, pendants and more.

4. Approve and we make it

Once you approve the design, your piece goes into production. Timing depends on the design and the stones, so we will give you an estimate before you confirm.

Good to know

  • Bring your ring size. Our ring size guide shows how to measure.
  • Custom orders are made just for you, so they are final sale.
  • Layaway is available, so you can reserve your piece and pay over time.
