How to Clean and Care for Your Fine Jewelry
A little care keeps fine jewelry bright and secure for a lifetime.
Cleaning at home
- Soak the piece for 15 to 20 minutes in warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap.
- Gently brush around the stones and under the setting with a soft toothbrush.
- Rinse in clean warm water (close the sink drain first).
- Dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.
Take it off when
- Swimming in chlorine pools or hot tubs, which can weaken gold.
- Cleaning with household chemicals or bleach.
- Working out, gardening or lifting heavy objects.
- Applying lotion, perfume or hairspray. Put jewelry on last.
Storing your jewelry
- Keep pieces separate, in soft pouches or a lined box, so diamonds do not scratch other jewelry.
- Fasten chains before storing to prevent tangles.
- Keep silver in an airtight bag to slow tarnishing.
Gemstones that need extra care
Emeralds, opals, pearls and many treated stones are sensitive to heat, chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners. Clean them only with a soft damp cloth.
Professional check-ups
Have rings checked about every six months. A jeweler can tighten loose prongs before a stone is lost, and polish or re-plate white gold.
