Metal Guide: 10K, 14K, 18K Gold and Platinum
The metal you choose affects how a piece looks, how it wears and what it costs.
Gold karats
Pure gold is 24 karat, which is too soft for everyday jewelry, so it is mixed with other metals for strength.
| Karat | Gold content | Character |
|---|---|---|
| 10K | 41.7% | Very durable, most affordable |
| 14K | 58.3% | The best balance of durability, color and price |
| 18K | 75% | Richer color, softer, more luxurious |
| 24K | 99.9% | Pure gold, too soft for most fine jewelry |
Gold colors
- Yellow gold: the classic warm tone, low maintenance.
- White gold: gold alloyed with white metals and plated with rhodium for a bright white finish. Re-plating every one to two years keeps it bright.
- Rose gold: copper gives it a soft pink tone. Very durable.
- Two-tone: combines white and yellow gold in one piece.
Platinum
Platinum jewelry is usually 95% pure (stamped 950 or PLAT). It is naturally white, heavier and hypoallergenic, so it is a good choice for sensitive skin. Over time it develops a soft satin patina, which can be polished back to a shine.
Silver
Sterling silver is 92.5% silver. It is affordable and bright, but softer than gold and it tarnishes, so it needs regular polishing.
